The Sennheiser MKH 416 P48 is a short shotgun interference tube microphone and a long-standing standard for film, television and radio. It is compact, highly directional and rejects off-axis sound very well.
The 416 is known for its high consonant articulation and strong rejection of feedback and off-axis noise, which is why it is a first choice on boom poles for dialogue, particularly outdoors. It is an RF condenser design, so it copes better with damp conditions than many conventional condensers, and it keeps a consistent character from take to take.
It has a super-cardioid and lobar pick-up pattern, a frequency response of 40Hz to 20kHz and a sensitivity of 25mV/Pa. Maximum SPL is 130dB and the microphone weighs 175g. The P48 version runs from standard 48V phantom power, so it plugs straight into any mixer or recorder with XLR inputs. Boom operators usually pair it with a blimp or a foam and Windjammer for exterior shoots.
