The Tiffen 82mm Variable ND is a single screw-in filter that lets you dial in 2 to 8 stops of neutral density. It means one filter on the lens in place of a bag of fixed NDs. It is a simple way to control exposure.
A variable ND lets you hold your aperture or a 180 degree shutter as the light changes through the day, without stopping to swap filters. It is a good fit for run-and-gun and documentary work, where there is no time to meter and change filters between shots.
This is the 82mm screw-in version, made with Tiffen's ColorCore process. It has a thin 9mm ring and a wider outer optic to help reduce vignetting at wide angles, and reference marks between MIN and MAX for recalling a setting. Rotate the front ring to change the density. It works on mirrorless and cine lenses with an 82mm thread. It is also quick to take off.
