The Rycote Windjammer and foam set is a two-layer wind protection kit for standard shotgun microphones. The foam slips on as a light windshield, and the furry Windjammer fits over it for extra protection outdoors.
The open-cell acoustic foam is a discreet slip-on windshield that protects against light wind and pop noise while keeping high frequency loss to a minimum. Add the Windjammer over the top and the set copes with light to moderate wind. The foam is made exclusively for Rycote and resists moisture and UV light, so it holds up on long exterior days.
The foam fits shotgun microphones with a 19 to 22mm diameter, with slots no further than 12cm from the front of the mic. Compatible models include the DPA 4017 and the Audio-Technica AT4073a. Rycote rates the foam at 10dB of wind noise attenuation and the Windjammer at 12dB. Rycote introduced the first microphone windshield system for location sound in 1969 and has since received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy.
